Tiruppur: Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) has sought enhancement of interest subvention on pre and post-shipment rupee export credit for knitwear exports from 2% to 4% up to March 31, 2011 for the benefit of the exporting community.

For the first time in seven years, India’s exports showed an annual decline. They declined by 4.7 per cent in 2009-10, despite a recovery witnessed since November 2009. At $176.5 billion, exports last year were lower than the $185.3 billion in 2008-09. In March, exports grew a whopping 54.4 per cent.

The Centre’s decision to ban the export of cotton has put hundreds of farmers from the state in a quandary. Bangladesh's spinners are trying to import cotton yarn and raw cotton from Africa, Austria, the US and Brazil after India recently imposed a ban on its export.
India is a major supplier of cotton yarn to Bangladesh, with intake of more than 3.5 million bales a year.
Imports from India have risen from the normal 10 percent to about 30 percent, from about 350,000 bales to 700,000 bales following a bad harvest in Uzbekistan.

Spinning mills, owing allegiance to the Souther India Mills Association (SIMA) have agreed to reduce the prices of hosiery yarn by Rs 5 a kg from May 1.
The decision, however, did not make the Tirupur knitwear cluster happy since the latter has sought a Rs 10/kg cut in the prices of cotton yarn.
While half-heartedly welcoming SIMA's decision, Mr A. Sakthivel, President, Tirupur Exporters' Association, said the reduction is insufficient, considering the level of hike in yarn price.

The Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) has hailed the Centre's announcement on removal of 7.67 per cent DEPB benefit on export of cotton yarn including melange yarn with immediate effect. Stating that the measure will help bring down yarn prices within a week, the TEA President, Mr A. Sakthivel, said the measure will benefit knitwear and garment exporters.
