Tirupur girl wins State chess championship
Tirupur: K. Priyanka (8), a student of Bharathi Kids School here, has brought laurels to the institution as well as the district by becoming the first person from Tirupur district to bag the State Under-9 Girls Chess Championship. She won the title by scoring 10 points in 11 rounds in the State event concluded at Hosur on January 23. The rise of Priyanka was phenomenal considering the fact that she started learning chess just two years ago.
Interest
Impressed by the trophy won by her school senior in some local chess tournament, the girl developed an interest in learning chess.
Ambition
Her father S. Kalidas, a textile businessman, enrolled her in the chess academy run by Vigneswaran, a FIDE-rated player, in Coimbatore, where she learnt chess theoretically.
Her ambition is to win the oncoming National Under-9 Chess Championship. “For this, we are giving her intensive coaching under renowned coaches,” Mr. Kalidas said.
